The coastal city of Xiamen in Fujian province is striving to win the title of National Ecological Garden City -- the highest honor a Chinese city can receive for its urban living environment -- according to the city's municipal bureau of forestry and parks.
The National Ecological Garden City assessment involves 46 indicators in six categories, including comprehensive management, green space construction, ecological environment, municipal facilities, energy conservation and emissions reduction.
Xiamen has met or exceeded the requirements in all the indicators, according to an official from the forestry and parks bureau.
Statistics show that Xiamen now has 4,596 hectares of park and green land area.
From 2013 to 2018, Xiamen's green coverage rate increased from 41.15 to 45.12 percent, and the per capita park green area increased from 12.42 to 14.85 square meters.
The winner of the National Ecological Garden City title will be announced by the end of this year.
