Xiamen in East China's Fujian province recently began exploring consumption possibilities and promoting nighttime tours to boost its night economy, Xiamen Daily reported on Oct 26.

The nighttime economy is seen as a new engine of local growth. In recent years, China has been striving to develop the service industry and nighttime businesses, and many Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, have rolled out plans to encourage nighttime consumption, which will help drive economic growth.

The new regulations, which will go into effect on Jan 1, 2020, require Xiamen to give full play to its competitive advantages, such as natural landscapes, cuisine, and cultural and creative products, and implement policies to support the development of the nighttime economy.

The city will also encourage nighttime tourism services and extend the hours at some scenic areas. 24-hour convenience stores, bookstores, food streets, and movie theaters will be built to promote the diversification of the city's tourism market.
