Xiamen Medical College is one of three full-time public medical undergraduate colleges in Fujian province, but the only college of its kind in south central Fujian. Boasting a long history, the college is derived from the Gulangyu Medical Specialized School which was founded in 1898 and has been committed to cultivating applied and technical talents for the medical, healthcare, biopharmaceutical and aged service sectors. 

The school occupies 33.5 hectares, with a building area of nearly 20 ha. The school library has a collection of about 500,000 paper books and a complete set of teaching and research instruments and equipment worth over 200 million yuan ($29.7 million) that ensures high-quality of education. 

The Xiamen Medical College encompasses nine teaching institutions, including the Department of Clinical Medicine, Department of Stomatology, Department of Nursing, Department of Pharmacy, Department of Medical Technology, and Department of Basic Medicine. In addition, it has two affiliated hospitals – the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen Medical College (a grade-III comprehensive hospital) and the Xiamen Medical College Affiliated Stomatological Hospital (a grade-III specialist hospital). Currently, there are more than 5,200 students on campus. 

The college is strong in scientific research, which is bolstered by five provincial-level, two city-level, and five school-level scientific research platforms, plus an analysis and testing center. Medical education also advances in coordination with a platform construction. The school has established a training and testing base to issue qualification certificates for national clinical and oral physicians. In addition to the two affiliated hospitals, there are two non-affiliated hospitals – Xiamen Xianyue Hospital (a grade-III class-A hospital) and Quanzhou Women's and Children's Hospital (a grade-III specialist hospital) as well as 25 teaching hospitals and more than 170 off-campus training bases. 

The medical college has established friendly cooperation ties with National Taiwan Ocean University, National Yang-Ming University, National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences, Tzu Chi University of Science and Technology, Fooyin University, China University of Science and Technology, Central Taiwan University of Sciences and Technology, South Korea's Catholic University of Deagu, Gimcheon College, Daejeon University, Daegu Haany University, and Germany's Cologne University of Applied Sciences. They have conducted international cooperation in running joint schools and research programs while encouraging exchange visits of scholars.
