Jimei district in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province, has been strong in the protection of water ecosystems since it first implemented the river chief system in 2017, a local newspaper reported on Nov 28.

River chiefs are responsible for protecting resources, preventing and controlling pollution, and restoring ecosystems. They are held accountable for environmental damage to bodies of water under their supervision.

Jimei has implemented a water-control system focusing on resource protection, pollution prevention, environmental governance, and ecological restoration. Jimei's major rivers and lakes are seeing consistent improvements in water quality thanks to the river chief system.

In the future, the district plans to continue developing the river chief system and create a unique water management system that makes use of the latest technology.
