The Universal Postal Union (UPU) Global Conference on Cross-border Cooperation in an E-commerce World commenced on Nov 26 in the coastal city of Xiamen, East China's Fujian province.

The two-day event, which attracted more than 380 representatives from domestic and international organizations, revolved around topics like cross-border e-commerce, supervision of global supply chains, and customs clearance.

In recent years, cross-border e-commerce has seen strong growth momentum, which has propelled the development of the post industry. According to statistics, about 70 percent of cross-border packages worldwide were delivered by postal services in 2018.

Cross-border trade, an essential part of globalization, plays an important role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of global supply chains. The global post network is expected to improve its service quality and apply new technologies to enhance global trade, according to Bishar Hussein, director of the UPU.

China has been playing an active role in the global cross-border delivery market, and currently, parcels from China accounted for 38 percent of all cross-border parcels worldwide. China's postal industry handled 350 billion yuan ($49.79 billion) in cross-border e-commerce transactions, according to Ma Junsheng, head of the State Post Bureau.

"China Customs plans to further enhance cooperation with the State Post Bureau and China Post in an effort to promote the informatization, intensification, and intelligentization of outbound goods," said Li Guo, deputy head of the General Administration of Customs. Li also expressed hope that UPU member countries would strengthen cooperation in multilateral data-sharing and work to improve the quality of data interaction.
