The bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province has an average daily passenger flow of 280,000 people, Xiamen Daily reported on Oct 12.

This year marks the 11th year since the BRT system was implemented in the coastal city.

The system has been a major boon for Xiamen with its well-arranged transportation network and ability to transport mass amounts of passengers during large events, such as the annual China International Fair for Investment & Trade and Xiamen International Marathon.

The report said that before typhoons and blisteringly hot days, BRT's maintenance members carry out a complete inspection of the 45 BRT stations, 139 escalators, 32 water pumps, 16 wells, 32 equipment rooms, and 16 low-lying areas which might suffer from floods.

The BRT team has worked out various long-term contingency plans to deal with unexpected situations and allow for ever-larger passenger flows.
