Some 3,000 runners took part in the opening race of the 2019 China University Marathon Series in the Xiamen campus of Huaqiao University on Sept 28. 

Known as China's most influential marathon held in campuses, this year's event is expected to attract over 10,000 participants from 24 universities and institutes. 

After a fiercely competitive 4.5-kilometer mini marathon, Yao Meijie from the school of politics and public management, took first place in the women's group. 

Yao is a keen runner who thinks running is an easy and enjoyable sport. 

"Everyone can enjoy running, and I'm happy to welcome in the National Day by winning the race in my school,"  Yao said. 

Many teachers, staff and alumni from Huaqiao University also took part in the race with their families. 

"We are willing to host such marathon events annually to help students build up a good physique and improve their health," said Wu Guining, vice dean of the school of physical education at Huaqiao University.
