An extended retrospective exhibition of Shoji Ueda, a surrealist photographer from Japan, opened in Xiamen in East China's Fujian province on Aug 31.
The exhibition features 141 early and late works ranging from his masterful series Sand Dunes to the fashion photographs that helped trigger a reappraisal of his achievements.
Shoji Ueda was born in 1913 in Tottori, Japan and started his career as a photographer by establishing a studio in his hometown in the 1930s.
Influenced by the Western avant-garde during his adolescence, Ueda maintained the passionate, uninhibited spirit of the amateur while he ran his own studio.
The worlds he managed to express within the constraints of commercial and fashion photography remain both surprising and deeply moving. In 1996, Ueda received the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from France, becoming the first photographer in the world to achieve the honor.
Exhibition times: 10: 00-18: 00, Aug 31 – Nov 10 (Open from Tuesdays to Sundays)
Location: Three Shadows Photography Art Centre
Address: 476 Xinglinwan Road, Jimei district, Xiamen
