A group of 32 students and teachers arrived at Xiamen in Fujian province on Aug 28, after a 10-day scientific research sea voyage.

The students came from Xiamen University, or XMU, as well as XMU Malaysia, the University of Malaya, the University of Sabah and the University of Putra in Malaysia and the University of Delaware.

They completed the Malaysia-Xiamen voyage, which was the third and last phase of the 2019 Haisi Xuetang talent training program.

Relying on the Research Vessel Tan Kah Kee, the program aims to train top marine professionals with an international vision and solid practical skills.

A total of 92 students took part in the program, which was divided into three phases along the South China Sea section of the Maritime Silk Road, from July 15 to Aug 28.

The students carried out research into marine chemistry, marine biology, marine physics, physical oceanography and marine geology during the 4,500-nautical-mile voyage.

The Research Vessel Tan Kah Kee arrived at Malaysia on Aug 15 and was open to the Malaysian public on Aug 17-18, providing a window for some 1,000 visitors to take a look at what marine science is all about.
