Tea, one of the cultural treasures of Fujian province, was brought to Hong Kong residents during an event promoting the area's profound tea culture. It opened at the city's convention and exhibition center on Aug 15.

Chen Mingwang, deputy director of the Fujian Provincial Department of Agricultural and Rural Affairs, said the event carries the hope of promoting Fujian's tea industry and culture in a comprehensive, efficient and high-quality manner.

"We hope to boost tea trade and cultural exchanges between Fujian and Hong Kong, thus making it possible to bring Fujian tea to international tables," Chen added.

The event saw more than 50 Fujian-based tea makers attending and inking contracts worth 380 million yuan ($53.8 million).

Fujian is the birthplace of oolong, black, white and flower tea. It is widely acknowledged for the quality of its tea, the unique environment for planting, varied tea types, and, most importantly, the exquisite tea-making techniques of local residents.

Hong Kong is an important tea buyer for Fujian. Statistics show that in 2018, Fujian exported tea worth $110 million to Hong Kong consumers, accounting for about one-third of the province's total tea export volume, registering a year-on-year increase of 74 percent.
