The China region part of the 2019 World Education Robot Contest (WER) opened in Jimei district in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province on Aug 17, local media reported.

This year's event gathered 923 participants from over 20 provinces and municipalities including Shanghai, Chongqing, Jiangsu and Fujian.

The event had an abundance of competitive categories that provided challenges for students of all ages.

In addition to testing children's thinking and teamwork abilities, the competition also tempers their willpower and unyielding spirit, said Chen Jinghua, a parent of one participant from Wuhan, Hubei province.

According to the report, the WER competition will be held in Xiamen for two years in a row, recognition of the city's development of science and technology education. The event will also promote science popularization and education in innovative science and technology in Xiamen and beyond.

An open championship of the WER's China region will be launched in Jinmen, Taiwan to deepen understanding between students from both sides of the Straits.
