Under the supervision of Xiamen's customs, a container from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, departed Xiamen in Fujian province for Atyrau in Kazakhstan on Aug 5.

The container is expected to arrive in Atyrau in 10 days via freight trains connecting China with Central Asia.

Officials said the event marked the start of a new mode of combined sea-rail transportation of China-Central Asia freight trains in Xiamen.

Xiamen became a major hub for China-Central Asia freight trains on Aug 16, 2015. After four years of development, the source areas for goods and products gradually expanded from Xiamen and surrounding areas to Jiangxi province, Guangdong province and Taiwan.

By Aug 5, 96 trains of the China-Central Asia freight trains with 6,812 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) had been shipped via Xiamen, with total import and export value of about 1.2 billion yuan ($170.13 million).
