Two junior school students from Xiamen in East China's Fujian province won two championships at the European Open of the World Educational Robot Contest (WER) held at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom on July 28.

The World Educational Robot Contest is an international robotics contest for primary and secondary students. Annually, more than 500,000 contestants from 50 countries participate in WER events.

Hong Hongjie and Zeng Xinyan from Xiamen No 10 Middle School won the Brick Educational Robot Contest and Extended Task Competition for junior high students.

The two young participants set a new record at the Brick Educational Robot Contest, completing all their tasks in just 2 minutes and 40 seconds, 20 seconds faster than the schedule time.

After the competition, Hong and Zeng gave an interview to local televisions in Chinese and English and were also invited to study at the robot research center at the University of Sheffield.

Xiamen No 10 Middle School has had an artificial intelligence laboratory for many years. By partnering up with a local intelligent science museum, the school has performed well in robot research and set up a robot racing team.

In 2018, the racing team started participating in national robot competitions in China and this is the first time that the team has been shortlisted for a global contest.

Moreover, the WER 2019 Cross-Straits Open, sponsored by the organizing committee of the Chinese division of WER, is set to kick off in Xiamen and Jinmen in late August 2019.
