Ke Junhuai, a third-year student at Xiamen No 1 Middle School, won second place in the world ship model competition with a 3D model of the Chinese ice-breaking research ship Xue Long, local media reported.

The 2019 NAVIGA World Championship for Scale Ship Models Class NS was held in Hungary recently. Held every two years, the championship attracted more than 250 competitors from 16 countries this year.

Ke built his ship with 3D printing technology, which made a splash at the competition.

Before the ship could sail on water, Ke did tons of work including computer graphics, printing and painting. Thousands of parts need to be produced to make a ship, Ke said.

In addition to the high requirements for the appearance of the model, the competition also requires entrants to have a strong psychological quality. Ke said that he practiced more than 10 hours a day before the competition.
