Xiamen Ocean Gate Container Terminal and China Mobile signed a strategic business agreement and launched a 5G smart port application on July 26, local media reported.
According to the agreement, China Mobile will supply communications equipment, 5G smart applications and cloud computing, among other things, to the terminal.
Ocean Gate Container Terminal was established in 2008, and is operated by COSCO Shipping Lines Co Ltd, the world's largest port terminal cargo operator.
With a maximum berthing capacity of 200,000 tons and a designed annual throughput of 2.6 million TEUs, or twenty-foot equivalent units, it is the first fully automated container terminal in China.
A port official said recognizing that the standard 4G network could not meet the strict performance requirements in terms of time intervals and bandwidth, Ocean Gate Container Terminal was deepening its cooperation with China Mobile to become the world's first terminal covered by 5G.
The official added that in future, the two sides would continue to explore new informatization applications in port operations, such as automatic driving and remote controls, to boost the high-quality development of the port industry in Xiamen.
