A concert played on suona (a double-reed horn) perfectly combining Chinese folk and Western musical style was held in Xiamen, Fujian province, July 13, local media reported.
Ou Xiaoqin, the solo suona performer, gave a spectacular 90-minute concert and received enthusiastic response from her audience at Xiamen Art Theater.
An ensemble of small and large suona played by Ou and Song Xiaohui, a special guest, was chosen for the first half of the concert. In the second half, the female musician joined a symphony orchestra from Xiamen Song and Dance Theater to give their interpretation of the classic suona song, Hundreds of Birds Worshipping the Phoenix, and refreshed the audience's impressions of music performed by suona.
Zhong Yihong, a local resident, said that this suona concert distinguished itself from what he had heard in his family home town and he really enjoyed the fusion of Chinese and Western musical styles.
According to Ou herself, the young female musician started her musical adventure when she was a primary student. She became a good suona performer after years of training and had made it to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music as a major in traditional instruments.
Ou worked hard to prepare for this concert and maintained two to three hours of high intensity training every day for the past six months.
