According to local media, the high-level competitive event attracts competitors from Fujian, Jiangsu, Jilin provinces, etc. In addition, in the past two years expert swimmers from Taiwan have taken part in the swimming relay race and the championship in Male's Group A, which is fiercely competitive.

The contest was organized by the Chinese Swimming Association, Xiamen Municipal Government, the Chinese Taipei Adult Swimming Association and the Jinmen county government. The annual event aims at enhancing friendly relations between residents from both sides of the Straits through sports events.

Now in its 10th year, the event continiously has a rescue system that works through cooperation between Xiamen and Jinmen to guarantee the swimmers' safety.

Some sideline activities, such as a youth swimmer race involving 408 teenagers from both Xiamen and Jinmen, will be held.
