Xiamen University in eastern Fujian province held a meeting on strengthening its characteristic physical education June 29.

Zhang Yan, Party secretary of Xiamen University, said during the meeting that physical education at the university has become a hot spot on the internet because of the availability of courses such as tree climbing, rugby, diving, sailing, rowing, fencing, tri-edge football and paddling.

Zhang mentioned that the characteristic courses not only provide more choices for students, but also stimulate their enthusiasm for sports.  

Xiamen University has achieved remarkable results in its competitive sports in recent years.

Its men's basketball team came third in this year's recently concluded China University Basketball Association (CUBA) competition.

And two students from the university's sailing team and one student from the basketball team will go to Naples, Italy, to participate in the 30th Summer Universiade on behalf of the Chinese national team.
