Dadeng Town is a 3A-rated national scenic spot where visitors can enjoy duty-free policies for six categories of products from Taiwan and visitors are only allowed to buy duty-free products worth less than 6,000 yuan ($868) each day. Therefore, the town is gaining a reputation as a place where visitors can buy Taiwan products with no need to cross the sea.

The location of Dadeng Town was carefully selected. It was fated to be located on Dadeng Island due to its significant role in a famous "8·23" artillery duel in nearby Kinmen, and its close relationship with Taiwan since the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Being only a 30-minute drive to Xiamen Island, and only one-hour drive to Zhangzhou, Quanzhou and the Xiamen Xiang'an International Airport which is under construction, the town can cater to all the visitors who want to enjoy the convenience of Taiwan.

Dadeng Town, previously known as Dadeng Cross-Straits Petty Commodities Trading Market, is a 0.83-square-kilometer area established as a customs supervision zone in 1998. A place that enjoys a duty-free policy to Taiwan is expected to strengthen friendly exchanges between cross-Straits people. Dadeng Town, designed by Li Zuyuan who designed the Taipei 101 skyscraper, opened in September 2011. It integrates the architectural styles of Fujian and Taiwan dwellings, western Fujian earth buildings, overhanging buildings, Taiwan shop houses, and a drama stage. Nearly 10,000 Taiwan products enter the mainland from Dadeng Town. Dadeng Island and its Dadeng Town have become a calling card for Xiamen tourism.
