Every year on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood.

Xiamen in eastern Fujian province has seen rapid development of its medical industry. Many patients from surrounding cities come to Xiamen for medical treatment, so demand for blood has been increasing every year.

According to the Xiamen blood center, the number of voluntary blood donations in the city reached about 60,000 in 2018, and helped thousands of patients.

Since 1992, the number of voluntary blood donors in Xiamen has exceeded 846,000, and young people aged 18-35 are the main donors, accounting for more than 60 percent of the total.

The blood center estimated that Xiamen needs about 200 blood donations per day to ensure an adequate supply of clinical blood.

In terms of blood testing, Xiamen blood center not only strictly implements relevant regulations of the National Health Commission, but has also introduced new testing technologies and methods to improve blood quality and further reduce the risk of diseases transmitted through blood.

The slogan of this year's World Blood Donor Day is "safe blood for all".
