A new meteorite museum --- located in Bailuzhou Park in downtown Xiamen, in Fujian province, opened its doors and began trial operations on June 13.

The 1,000-square-meter museum houses more than 2,000 various kinds of rare meteorites, including siderolite, syssiderite and tektite. Among the exhibits on show are some rare meteorites such as the lunar meteorite and pallasite.

Meteorites come in all shapes and sizes. But no matter how big or small they are their density makes them truly "heavyweight" exhibits. The heaviest one weighs 2.6 tons, according to a staff member of the museum.

In future, the museum will strengthen its cooperation with scientific institutions at home and abroad, change the exhibits over from time to time, and hold science activities to popularize meteorite science.

Address: No 100-2 Hubin Middle Road, Siming district, Xiamen

Opening hours: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm

The museum is now free to visitors.
