A team of four students from Xiamen No. 6 High School in Fujian province recently won the grand prize in the 5th Annual International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC) for Greater China.

This year's challenge integrated mathematics with science, technology and engineering, and covered the application of mathematics in production and social life.

The students from Xiamen put forward a method of self-restraint in online games by a mathematical model. They have gone through the challenges of autumn, winter and international competitions, and passed multiple paper reviews.

After six months of hard work, they stood out from 586 teams from China including Hong Kong and Macao. It was the first time that a school in Fujian has won such a prize.

Xiamen No.6 High School opened mathematical modeling elective courses early in 2016, taking the lead in the region.

The students study and build mathematical models for hot issues in real life, such as traffic congestion, future population development, medical quality evaluation and garbage classification, doing analysis and preparing research reports.

IMMC is an international mathematical modeling competition for high school students to promote mathematical modeling and applications.
