Haicang wugong ge, a traditional folk performance
Updated: May 6, 2019
As a traditional folk performance in Xiamen, Haicang wugong ge (or zhuang ge, long ge, feng ge) is an example of yi ge, a unique folk recreational activity in Fujian province and Taiwan.
It can be seen in costume parades staged during sacrifices and competitions in Xiamen, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Taiwan and Jinmen.
The props consist of dozen of platforms decorated by birds and animals symbolizing good fortune and luck. Children wearing opera costumes sit these platforms, which are carried by two, four or eight men.
At grand ceremonies, the performers walk in a parade to local folk music as a centipede (wugong in Chinese) winding along the ground.
