Huaqiao University Admission Prospectus and Scholarships Information for International Students

Established in 1960, Huaqiao University (HQU) is a national key comprehensive university and a national academic base of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. The university is located in Fujian Province, with one campus in Xiamen, a bright pearl at sea and the winner of UN Habitat Scroll of Honor, and the other in Quanzhou, a famous historic and cultural city. Committed to providing education to students from foreign countries, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, HQU is dedicated to serving the overseas Chinese and promoting Chinese culture. As one school with domestic and overseas students, the university is a strong believer in teaching students in accordance with their aptitude. It has built a unique campus culture of diversity but harmony. Over the years, HQU has made remarkable achievements in training talents.
College of Chinese Language and Culture (CCLC) of HQU specializes in providing overseas Chinese education, teaching Chinese as a foreign language as well as pre-university education for international students, and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Formerly known as Jimei Overseas Chinese Tutoring School, CCLC was established in 1953 and incorporated into HQU in 1997. CCLC was among the first to admit international students under the approval of the Ministry of Education. It is also one of the first national academic bases of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language approved by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. It is the key institution of facilitating Chinese teaching in neighboring countries with the support of Hanban, China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL). It is the first Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) Center in Fujian authorized by the Chinese government. Since its establishment over 60 years ago, more than 40,000 students from home and abroad have been successfully trained to serve 94 countries and regions. CCLC boasts a group of professional teachers who are passionate about teaching Chinese language and familiar with the characteristics of international students. At present, CCLC has 70 full-time teachers, half of whom are with senior professional titles. All of the young teachers under the age of 35 have received doctoral degrees in fields related to Chinese international education.
CCLC runs the operation mode of serving the overseas Chinese and promoting Chinese culture, attaches great importance to disseminating Chinese language and culture, and develops a multi-level and multi-form school running system that is based on programs designed to spread Chinese language to the world. The college offers the master programs of Chinese Language and Chinese Language Education, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and Teaching Chinese As a Foreign Language, and the undergraduate programs of Teaching Chinese As a Foreign Language, Chinese Language Education, and Chinese Language. A junior college program of Chinese Language is also available. CCLC offers six-month and twelve-month Chinese learning classes (elementary, intermediate and advanced) on Business Chinese, Tourism Chinese, and Chinese Culture. Late enrollment is accepted in accordance with levels and needs of students. CCLC has achieved gratifying success in graduate program for international students, higher education program for the self-taught, teaching qualification certificate program and short-term teaching training, all of which are well-received in many countries. CCLC also cooperates with Chinese promotion organizations from different countries in running teaching qualification certificate programs, hosting summer/winter camps for learning Chinese and organizing field trips to explore China. At present, over 1,000 international students from over 50 countries and regions, including Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Russia, the US, the UK, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan are studying in CCLC.
CCLC gives a platform for students from home and abroad to show their talents and therefore forms a unique campus culture of "celebrating different cultures with the aim of promoting Chinese culture". Students from home and abroad work together to host Chinese Culture Contests, Classics Reading Contests, Southeast Asia Cultural Festivals, Indonesian Night Fairs and Loy Krathong Festivals. The college provides the international students with an opportunity to travel around China during summer and winter breaks. Chinese students and international students interact with each other and help to create an excellent language environment, which has become one of the distinctive characteristics of CCLC.
Located in Jimei Schools Village in Xiamen, fronting the sea with hills at the back, CCLC offers convenient transportation and complete facilities including smart classrooms with sophisticated equipment, Chinese culture experience rooms, language labs, multimedia rooms, Internet rooms and electronic libraries. Students can also enjoy cozy student apartments, canteens, shops and sports fields.
Programs for International Students
I. Chinese Culture Education
This is an internationally-oriented four-year undergraduate program of Chinese language education. It is designed to cultivate high-quality overseas Chinese teachers and leaders of overseas Chinese communities and promote Chinese international education. Students enrolled can apply for Overseas Chinese Education Scholarship set up by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council (for application procedures, refer to Admission Prospectus of Undergraduate Program in Chinese Culture Education at Huaqiao University, P. R. China).
1.1 Main courses: Pedagogy, Psychology, Second Language Teaching, Integrated Chinese, Chinese Listening, Chinese Speaking, Chinese Reading, Chinese Writing, Modern Chinese, Chinese Literature, Chinese Culture, etc.
1.2 Entrance requirements: Applicants shall be overseas Chinese with high school diploma or above, have basic knowledge of Chinese language, and be interested in Chinese international education and under 30 years of age.
II. Chinese Language
The program recruits international students and consists of a two-year junior college education and a four-year undergraduate program that has three specialties, i.e., Chinese Culture, Business Chinese and Tourism Chinese. By comprehensively developing the students' Chinese listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation and integrated language skills and extending their knowledge of Chinese language and culture, the goal is to cultivate application-oriented all-round talents qualified for cultural exchanges, business negotiations, tourism services and other work with good command of Chinese language and intercultural communication skills, systematic knowledge of Chinese basic theory, a general picture of Chinese society and culture and clear understanding of international communication of Chinese culture, international modern business or tourism operation and management.
2.1 Main courses
Notes:
(1) Late enrollment is accepted for those with basic knowledge of Chinese.
(2) Students with adequate credits required for graduation shall obtain corresponding diploma; bachelor's degree shall be granted to those who pass thesis defense.
(3) Other courses offered include Chinese Painting, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Martial Arts, Chinese Music, Chinese Folk Dance, Handcrafts, Chinese Idioms, Chinese Character Culture, Chinese Geography, Chinese History, etc.
2.2 Entrance requirements: Applicants shall be overseas Chinese or foreigners with high school diploma or above, be at least 18 years of age, and hold valid passports.
III. Non-Degree Chinese Language Program
Half-year and one-year Chinese language classes in two specialties are offered, i.e., Business Chinese and Tourism Chinese. Students shall take a placement test before they are sorted into elementary, intermediate and advanced classes according to their Chinese language proficiency. Throughout the program, the students shall develop basic language skills as well as basic knowledge in related fields. The program aims to meet diverse and personalized learning needs.
Applicants shall be overseas Chinese or foreigners with high school diploma or above, be at least 18 years of age, and hold valid passports.
3.1 Elementary (I & II): Courses provided include Integrated Chinese: Elementary, Elementary Chinese Speaking, Elementary Chinese Listening, Elementary Chinese Reading, Chinese Characters for Beginners, Chinese Calligraphy, etc. Students shall develop basic knowledge in Chinese Pinyin and pronunciation skills, and meanwhile enhance basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to satisfy their basic needs in everyday life, study and social exchange.
3.2 Intermediate (I & II): Courses provided include Integrated Chinese: Intermediate, Intermediate Chinese Speaking, Intermediate Chinese Listening, Intermediate Chinese Reading, Basic Chinese Writing, News Reading, etc. Students shall demonstrate moderate listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with adequate language proficiency for undergraduate study in colleges and universities around China.
3.3 Advanced (I & II): Courses provided include Integrated Chinese: Advanced, Business Chinese, Tourism Chinese, Spoken Chinese for Business, Spoken Chinese for Tourism, Business Writing, etc. Students shall be able to understand Chinese radio and television programs, newspapers and magazines, pursue academic study in graduate schools or above in China, and engage themselves in various social activities and general work such as tourism and business with proficiency in Chinese.
3.4 Duration of study: Course duration is one year for each elementary, intermediate and advanced level, which is further divided into two six-month sections. Students can choose to study six months, one year or even longer and they can also take a placement test before they start from any section according to their Chinese proficiency. Those who complete prescribed courses and pass the exams shall be issued a corresponding certificate.
IV. Short-Term Training Program
The CLCC Training Department is responsible for the training of international students and teachers. It also provides a full range of services for the study and accommodations of students and trainees and arranges field trips to major scenic spots in Xiamen, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou and Mount Wuyi. The Fees for short-term training, referred to as miscellaneous service charges, shall be 350 CNY per person per day.

4.1 Teacher Training
Main types:
(1) Chinese language and culture training courses for overseas Chinese teachers;
(2) Second language teaching training for overseas Chinese teachers;
(3) Multimedia courseware and teaching training for overseas Chinese teachers;
(4) Training courses for principals of overseas Chinese schools.
Courses: Basic Theory of Second Language Teaching, Chinese Teaching Methods, Multimedia Applications in Chinese Teaching, Writing Teaching Plans, Chinese Culture, Language Teaching Practice, Classroom Observation, etc. Other workshops are provided if required.
Target group: overseas Chinese teachers.
Training objectives: to improve trainees' Chinese teaching ability and Chinese cultural skills.
4.2 Winter/Summer Camp
Main types:
(1) Summer camp on Chinese language learning for overseas Chinese teenagers;
(2) Summer camp on Chinese language and culture for foreign students;
(3) Summer camp on Chinese talent for foreign students;
(4) Summer camp on Chinese culture for students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan;
(5) Mandarin training for students from Hong Kong and Macao.
Courses: Language, culture and talent courses of different levels are provided according to students' Chinese proficiency.
Target group: overseas Chinese teenagers, students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and foreign students.
Training objectives: to extend students' knowledge in Chinese language and culture, improve their Chinese communication skills and promote their understanding of Chinese society.
V. Pre-University Program
Pre-University Program (PUP) is designed to help those formally enrolled to promote their learning and improve their Chinese to lay a good foundation for progress towards the first year of undergraduate study.
5.1 Admission time: PUP enrolls students in both spring and fall semesters. Students enrolled in spring semester are mainly high school graduates from Southeast Asia.
5.2 Admission criteria: Though it is not as strict as that for undergraduate programs, students are admitted on merit-based principle according to their performance in the examination held in the country/region of residence or in high school graduation exam. For details, refer to the admission prospectus and cut-off line in the country/region of the same year.
5.3 Courses: Students are sorted into liberal arts class and science class. Courses provided include Chinese, Advanced Mathematics, College English, liberal arts or science courses as required and other related college courses.
5.4 Notes on PUP A Class and B Class and procedures for direct progress toward undergraduate study:
5.4.1 Students enrolled to PUP A Class can directly progress to undergraduate study at Huaqiao University upon completion of one-year study if they pass the exams;
5.4.2 Students enrolled to PUP B Class may directly progress to undergraduate study at Huaqiao University upon completion of one-year study if in compliance with relevant regulations of HQU;
5.4.3 Students enrolled to PUP B Class can in principle progress to A Class for further study upon completion of one-year study if they pass the exams;
5.4.4 Students enrolled to PUP B Class can also choose to take other entrance exams the next year, such as Joint Entrance Examination of Jinan University and Huaqiao University, and National Joint Entrance Examination for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Students. Students can be admitted to undergraduate programs at HQU if they pass the exams.
5.5 Undergraduate major selection: As they progress to undergraduate study, science students can select from all majors, liberal arts students can select from majors except science and engineering, while majors of art and physical education are open to both liberal arts and science students.
School Year and Application Procedures
I. School year
An academic year consists of two semesters. The first semester starts at the beginning of September, and the second one starts in mid or late February. Enrollment is also possible all year round.
II. Application procedures
2.1 The applicants shall fill out the Application Form for International Students, Huaqiao University and mail it along with a photocopy of passport, high school diploma (English version) and transcript (English version) to CCLC Admissions Office.
2.2 The Admissions Office shall send JW202 and Admission Notice to the applicants one month after it receives the application form. With JW202 and Admission Notice, the applicants then go to the Chinese Embassy and apply for the Student Visa (X1, X2).
2.3 Transfer applicants shall also present their college transcript and attendance record and go to the local immigration office to apply for transfer of residence permit prior to enrollment.
2.4 Applicants enrolled shall go to CCLC's office within one week to apply for a residence permit and have a physical examination at their own expense.

(1) CCLC has canteens for students to enjoy meals at their own expense.
(2) Upon enrollment, students shall pay all of the fees mentioned above.
(3) CCLC shall arrange for students who want to stay during summer and winter breaks.
(4) Tuition, accommodation and application fees can not be returned after enrollment.
