Founded in 1960, Huaqiao University is the first higher education institution to be named Huaqiao (meaning "overseas Chinese") with the approval of former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai.
Dedicated to recruiting students from abroad, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, HQU aims to spread traditional Chinese culture and cultivate students of both Chinese and foreign cultures.
Nearly 200,000 students of all levels have graduated from the university since its establishment, most of which have become envoys of friendship who work to promote communication and cooperation between China and other countries.
HQU has 25,124 full-time undergraduates and 5,802 graduates (including 401 doctoral students and 5,401 postgraduate students), among which 4,627 are international students from over 50 countries and regions including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. HQU is one of the top destinations for overseas students in China.
HQU employs 2,665 remarkable teaching and auxiliary staff, including 1,787 full-time teachers, 6 academicians, a number of scholars supported by the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, National High-Level Talents Special Support Plan and other projects, and over 400 scholars receiving China's State Council Allowance.
HQU has two campuses, covering a total area of 2,147,800 square meters, among which 1,058,800 square meters are occupied by buildings. The university has more than 4,422,000 copies of books and other materials.
